BIO

San Francisco Bay Area jazz vocalist Tiffany Austin appeared suddenly on the national scene in 2015 with the release of Nothing But Soul, one of the decade’s most widely hailed debut albums. The fact that she’d just graduated from the UC Berkeley School of Law made her emergence that much more spectacular. With her second album, Unbroken, the Los Angeles native stakes a claim as a formidable songwriter and intrepid musical explorer.

Far more than a collection of songs, Unbroken is a timeless meditation on African-American culture’s extraordinary resilience, with a soul-steeped affirmation that embraces blues and swing, spirituals and R&B, bebop, post-bop, and her own Louisiana Creole heritage. Produced by Grammy Award-winning jazz champion Richard Seidel, the album features a stellar cast of jazz veterans, including pianist Cyrus Chestnut, bassist Rodney Whitaker, and drummer Carl Allen.

Monstrous Technologies?—Philosophy Talk Live with Guest Persis Drell

Experience a live taping of Philosophy Talk radio, and see how much fun thinking can be

Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein raises powerful questions about the responsibilities of scientists to consider the impact of their inventions on the world. Are these questions as relevant now as they were 200 years ago? What insights, if any, should today’s technologists and disrupters glean from Shelley's story? What does it mean to take responsibility for one’s scientific or technological innovations? And what role should university educators play in ensuring that no new monsters are unleashed onto the world?

Join our live audience at Stanford as we record Philosophy Talk, the nationally syndicated public radio show.

Two performances at 10am and 1pm.

Modesty is a middle school aged girl who is struggling with bullying.  She tries daily to melt into the scenery so classmates won’t make fun of her and even worse, is too afraid to protect her friends enduring the same abuse. At night, she escapes into a magical book about the life of Harriet Tubman and is visited by the commanding historical figure who offers advice, tells stories that connect to her life today, and ultimately shows how she triumphed during a moment in the Civil War of great peril with the power of love and music. Students of Rooftop Middle School play roles as adolescent bullies, timid underdogs, and freed slaves during the Civil war. They share the stage with jazz great Tiffany Austin as Harriet Tubman and Christabel Nunoo as the youthful Modesty accompanied by a Jazz Ensemble led by Marcus Shelby under the baton of Lucik Aprahämian and directed by Erin Neff.
